Founders’ Fortune – Review

My Journey

Starting with two humble villagers, Franziska (a researcher) and Horst (a forester/doctor), I kicked down trees, wrestled crystals from the ground, plucked apples, and picked cotton until I had enough resources to lay out a one-bedroom shack with simple beds where they both could live. They seemed happy with me, in those early days, content to follow my every whim.

Then Came Monika

I was delighted to welcome my first new recruit, but found out she was a moody bit..uh…young lass. She’d work a little, then get so upset that she had to stare up at the clouds for hours at a time until she finally calmed down enough to be useful again.

As time went by, my little village expanded, now a sprawling multi-room complex with six, seven, eight new recruits coming to join us, all with their own quirks and issues. We made do.

Until The Pirates Came

The goblins we shared the island with occasionally asked for little things. Nothing we couldn’t afford to lose, but the pirates often wanted more than we had, more than we could produce. They came with their demands, giving us only days to prepare. And prepare we did. Training on practice dummies, we grew stronger. Turning our wooden swords in for stone swords and bows and crafting armour for each member of our society.

When the pirates came, we were prepared. Combat was a hectic affair with individuals losing their pathing to the enemy while getting stabbed from behind; a mass of bodies colliding without the ability for nuanced tactics. Several villagers fell, unconscious. But the battle was won and the doctors tended to the needs of the injured.

When the traders came, we sold them the weapons and armour of our foes, exchanging these mostly for valuable Scrolls, which Franziska could study to research more advanced technologies. At some point, my villagers demanded their own houses, and the great hotel was deconstructed in favour of eleven two-story homes.

They’d still visit one another from time to time out in the field, or to grab a quick bite in someone else’s house, or just sit by the fireplace and contemplate how far they’ve come. All seemed content.

But then, it was time to say goodbye. All research had been completed, all enemies felt managed. Nothing more to do other than reflect on the pleasant hours spent in Founder’s Fortune, and to thank the devs for their efforts so far.
The two most glaring areas I see that need improvement are combat (keeping all combatants from falling into a tangled knot), and the economy.

Yes, traders buy some of the other goods you can produce but by far, the greatest source of income from trade came from selling tiki/pirate weapons and armour. I can’t imagine how long it would have taken to afford all the scrolls I needed to reach the end if I was playing a peaceful game. I’d also like to see fewer pirate raids, but with more tactical combat.

Other suggestions would be to increase the walk speed along paths significantly and perhaps allow for auto towers for defense. But these are fairly minor foibles, some particular to my tastes. For what it is, this game is definitely on the right path. I look forward to seeing where this game develops from here!
