Devour – Game Review

First off, it’s great seeing more co-op horror games. Playing a scary game by yourself is one thing, but sharing scares with your besties on a Friday night while having a few adult beverages is a hell of a lot of fun, and Devour delivers a lot of scares.

Co-Op Horror Survival

Devour is a co-op horror survival game for 1-4 players. You play as a cult member that has to try and stop the possesed cult leader from killing you (and your friends, if you’re playing co-op). Sounds dark and creepy? It is.

In order to stop the cult leader from being possessed, you have to sacrifice ten goats. Naturally. Not only do you have to watch out for the squirrelly leader, but you also have to watch out for the other demons. While there isn’t a whole lot to this game, they’re already working on a second map that takes place five years earlier.

Incidentally, this game has only two developers (Joe and Luke), which is impressive and really shows you how much a small team can get done. Kudos to them.

Gameplay

You first have to go into the house to explore around. You’ll see items such as hay, petrol/gas, a goat, and med packs.

The cult leader is all sorts of scary and crazy. Once you do the first goat sacrifice, you end up automatically being chased by her. Oh, and you’re also only armed with a flashlight. Luckily, the flashlight is somewhat useful, as you can turn it to “UV” mode. Point the flashlight at her while in that mode and it will prevent her from running at you, stunning her for a few seconds, where you can quickly get out of Dodge.

You can also take out her little minions (demons?) that are crawling around as well. A nice touch.

Also, the more goats you sacrifice, the faster, and crazier she gets.

Playing With Friends

I played the game with two of my friends and we had a real laugh. I’ll admit there was a part where the cult leader caught me and it scared the hell outta me. I may have said some nasty curse words (beeped out in the video). There are a number of great jump scares if you do get caught, as you’d expect.

Storyline

In terms of the story, there are little notes you can read that give some background on what the hell went wrong with the cult leader. This is a nice touch. You’ll also find keys around the house that come in handy.

In terms of the goats, well, like I said you have to sacrifice ten of them. We only got to eight.

Dislikes

While the game is a lot of fun, there are a few things I didn’t like too much. The game is marketed as “run and hide”, however, hiding doesn’t really work. Even if you have the doors closed, she will come through them with her lanky arms and legs.

The flashlight is also a little awkward. When you use it, you only get 5 seconds to get away from her.

Likes

There are some good sides to the game as well. If you’re taken out, your friends can easily find a med-pack and go to you and pick you back up. The med-packs randomly appear which is alright, I suppose.

Verdict

Overall the game is good, and it’s a ton of laughs when you have friends with you. I’m not sure I’d recommend to play it alone, however. It also feels like this game is using the same asset and style as other games like Phasmophobia, In Silence, and the like. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it could get a little “samey” after a while.

The last thing I have to mention is the incredible price. This game is affordable, with a price tag under $5 at the moment. You can’t go wrong with that price!
