According to Leth from Team Cherry, “we’ve finished all the content of the game and are in final testing” but even that doesn’t say everything about the final release schedule. He goes on to state his own personal release philosophy that “you should not announce a release date until you have a build that could be released, and then you are just giving yourself more time to fix additional bugs and market a game”.
Essentially, all the content of Hollow Knight Silk Song is done – it just isn’t quite at the level of polish that they would feel comfortable announcing a hard release date. Fixing bugs, engineers making sure things are optimized, and artists are happy with the way things look (among other things).
This year we saw Cyberpunk 2077 get rushed to market (despite numerous delays) and how that affected their reputation. Team Cherry won’t make the same mistake, and we can expect them not to announce an official release date until they have ironed out any remaining issues.
With all this, it’s still likely this game is coming in the first half of 2021, probably late Q2, with June as the safe bet.
